La, La, La, La, Lemon

Speaking of songs going through my head, this one has been for days. I used to record children's songs all the time and I do miss that. Someday I'd love to do an album of my own of children's songs (all the recording I did was for a private education company - I don't own any of those recordings). I don't usually blog about my career ambitions or even what I want to do for a living. That is probably because... well... it's complicated. I got a bachelor's degree in music education. I la, la, LOVE teaching and music is truly my passion. Then I started performing. Mmmm. Performing. What a beautiful rush, what a high! The energy that I feel flowing between me and the audience is addicting and so powerful! So I got my masters in vocal performance and music history. Now, the question is, what the heck am I supposed to do now? I love to perform, but I don't want that to be my full-time career. I want to raise my family and not pay someone else to do it for me. Not that I object to babysitters and friends watching the Bean - I am indebted to so many people already... But performing, really performing as a career requires a lot of travel and a lot of time away from home. Not my bag, baby.
Well, I've tried lots of things, and to be honest with you, I'm blogging not because I've made a hard and fast decision about where I'm going, but I figure I have to go in a direction, so this is the one I'm going in. For now.
I am going to work towards getting my DMA in vocal performance. I am going to try and build my business as a vocal teacher at the same time. I just found a teacher here Boston University and I am excited to work with him. I have one voice student and she is a great student. One problem though, how do I get the word out that I am available to teach to the rest of those students that are just pining away for a great teacher like me? How do I let the aspiring singers of Newton know I can make their vocal aspirations come true? Seriously, anyone? A little free marketing advice? In exchange, here's a little free singing advice:
Breathe. It's all about breathing, low, full and relaxed. If you can get that, you are on the right track.
Help!

Here's the best advice for getting the word out about your services: network.

Find someone who has a lot of people in their network where you want to be...and introduce yourself. Serve on a board of some sort. Just, get out there and work it, baby! It will take time, but networking is the best way to do this.

Also, you may want to teach someone for free in exchange for marketing help. Just an idea.

Are there local music stores that post lists of music teachers? Send mass emails to everyone you know that lives in Boston and ask them to forward them on? Post a flyer at the university, and at any local university hang outs etc. I'll keep thinking...
