Tourbus Tuesdays - le regard
This isn't something they will show you on a tour of Paris, but it is something that is a part of French life, at least, in my experience. Americans can be overt. When we have a problem with someone, we tell them. When we think someone is attractive, we tell them. The French communicate a great deal more with the way they look at someone. With a look they can communicate compassion, desire, disapproval and so much more. The look can be a powerful tool to master and an important one to understand. Is your waiter ignoring you? Before getting all American and saying "oh waiter!" try looking in his direction for a minute or two. Is that shop keeper going to give you a good deal? Try checking out how they look at you and their body language.
